Built for the field
An aluminum enclosure with a Delrin antenna housing balances durability with radio performance. A silicone keypad and gaskets provide tactile control and IP65 protection.
Rugged communication device
A portable data terminal designed for demanding environments, with a rugged enclosure and a full physical keyboard.
The project
A collaborative project with EMBEDITY.
Industrial design: Dmitriy Savenkov.
A communication device for first responders and field teams. The product combines smartphone-like functions with professional radios, supporting 4G LTE and HF, VHF and UHF communication where conventional mobile service is unavailable.
Integrate antennas into an all-metal housing, protect the electronics from moisture and dust, and keep the display and controls usable outdoors. A high-capacity battery also needed to be replaceable in the field.
Design decisions
An aluminum enclosure with a Delrin antenna housing balances durability with radio performance. A silicone keypad and gaskets provide tactile control and IP65 protection.
A full physical keyboard, a sunlight-readable transflective display and a replaceable 7000 mAh battery support extended use away from infrastructure.
The enclosure was designed for CNC machining. Silicone parts were made using a low-volume molding process, keeping tooling practical for limited production.

Product overview
The outcome
The team delivered two assembled engineering samples and four additional circuit board sets for software development and demonstrations. The mechanical design supported small-batch production without expensive tooling.
